Job Title: Pediatrician (Resident/Consultant)

Reporting to: Medical Director


1. Job Purpose

To provide comprehensive, evidence-based paediatric and neonatal care aimed at promoting the health, growth, and development of infants, children, and adolescents, in line with hospital clinical standards, SafeCare requirements, and Ministry of Health guidelines.

The Pediatrician ensures optimal quality of care through accurate diagnosis, appropriate management, patient safety, and effective collaboration with other clinical departments.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Clinical Care & Patient Management

  1. Provide daily clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for all paediatric and neonatal patients (both inpatient and outpatient).
  2. Ensure timely and appropriate investigations, treatment, and follow-up in line with established Standard Treatment Protocols (STPs).
  3. Conduct ward rounds and document findings comprehensively in patient files.
  4. Ensure rational use of medicines and adherence to hospital formulary.
  5. Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and case reviews.
  6. Provide resuscitation and emergency management for critically ill children and neonates.
  7. Supervise safe admissions, transfers, and discharges according to clinical and nursing criteria.
  8. Oversee neonatal screening, growth monitoring, and immunization schedules.

B. Quality & Risk Management

  1. Adhere to SafeCare standards and ensure continuous improvement of paediatric care indicators.
  2. Participate in regular clinical audits (e.g., morbidity, mortality, antibiotic use, neonatal outcomes).
  3. Ensure patient documentation meets completeness, legibility, and accuracy standards.
  4. Report all adverse eventsmedication errors, and near misses through the hospital’s incident reporting system.
  5. Support infection prevention and control (IPC) practices within paediatric and neonatal units.
  6. Ensure timely completion of discharge summaries and mortality reviews.

C. Training, Supervision & Mentorship

  1. Supervise and mentor junior medical officers, nurses, and interns in paediatric care.
  2. Participate in CME (Continuing Medical Education) sessions, both as a facilitator and participant.
  3. Contribute to clinical guideline development and update processes.
  4. Support competency-based training and assessment for departmental staff.

D. Communication & Patient Rights

  1. Uphold patient-centered care, ensuring confidentiality, informed consent, and compassionate communication with children and families.
  2. Counsel parents and guardians regarding disease prevention, immunization, nutrition, and home care.
  3. Collaborate with the Customer Care and Quality Assurance teams to address patient complaints and feedback.

E. Administration & Coordination

  1. Participate in departmental meetings, SafeCare reviews, and multidisciplinary clinical governance meetings.
  2. Maintain accurate service statistics and submit departmental reports monthly.
  3. Liaise with pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology for efficient patient management.
  4. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, SOPs, and ethical codes.

3. Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB/MBBS) from a recognized university.
  • Master’s Degree in Paediatrics and Child Health.
  • Valid registration and annual practice license with KMPDC.
  • BLS and PALS certification preferred.
  • At least 3–5 years’ post-qualification experience in a busy hospital setting.
