Job Title: Anaesthesiologist & Critical Care Specialist

Reporting to: Medical Director

1. Job Purpose

To provide safe, evidence-based anaesthesia and critical care services across surgical, procedural, and emergency settings while ensuring adherence to hospital clinical standards, SafeCare requirements, and Ministry of Health regulations.

The role involves clinical leadership in perioperative care, intensive care management, pain control, and patient safety through effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Anaesthesia & Perioperative Management

  1. Conduct pre-anaesthetic evaluations and risk stratification for all surgical patients.
  2. Administer anaesthesia safely for elective and emergency surgeries (general, regional, or local).
  3. Monitor intraoperative parameters and ensure maintenance of airway, ventilation, and circulation.
  4. Supervise recovery and postoperative pain management in the PACU (Post Anaesthesia Care Unit).
  5. Maintain anaesthesia records and ensure documentation meets hospital and SafeCare standards.
  6. Collaborate with surgeons and nurses to ensure theatre efficiency and turnaround times.
  7. Ensure adherence to WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and theatre protocols.

B. Critical Care / ICU-HDU Management

  1. Lead the management of critically ill patients in ICU and HDU, including ventilatory and hemodynamic support.
  2. Establish and implement evidence-based protocols for sepsis, shock, ARDS, and mechanical ventilation.
  3. Participate in daily ICU multidisciplinary ward rounds and case discussions.
  4. Guide and supervise nurses and medical officers in ICU procedures and care plans.
  5. Review and authorize admission and discharge criteria for ICU/HDU patients.
  6. Coordinate with laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy for timely investigations and management.
  7. Participate in end-of-life care discussions, patient counseling, and ethical decision-making.

C. Quality & Risk Management

  1. Ensure compliance with SafeCare Standards on patient safety, risk management, and clinical leadership.
  2. Participate in clinical audits, including morbidity and mortality reviews, anaesthetic complications, and ICU outcomes.
  3. Promote rational use of drugs, blood, and consumables.
  4. Ensure infection prevention and control (IPC) compliance in theatre and ICU.
  5. Report and analyze all adverse events, critical incidents, or near-misses using hospital reporting systems.
  6. Maintain calibration and safety checks of anaesthesia machines, ventilators, and monitors in collaboration with biomedical engineers.

D. Training, Mentorship & Research

  1. Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to theatre, ICU, and recovery room staff.
  2. Facilitate internal training and CME sessions on anaesthesia safety, airway management, and critical care skills.
  3. Support academic and research initiatives in patient safety, pain management, and intensive care medicine.
  4. Participate in staff competence assessments and appraisals.

E. Communication & Professional Conduct

  1. Uphold patient-centered, ethical, and confidential medical practice.
  2. Communicate effectively with surgical teams, patients, and families regarding anaesthetic plans, risks, and postoperative care.
  3. Collaborate with quality, pharmacy, and customer care teams to address patient feedback or complaints.
  4. Exhibit teamwork and professionalism within the multidisciplinary hospital setting.

3. Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB/MBBS).
  • Master’s Degree in Anaesthesia and/or Critical Care Medicine from a recognized university.
  • Valid registration and annual practice license with KMPDC.
  • Current certification in BLSACLS, and ATLS.
  • Minimum 3 years’ post-specialization experience in anaesthesia and critical care.
