JOB DESCRIPTION: LOCUM MEDICAL OFFICER (Per-Shift)

Position Title: Locum Medical Officer (LMO)
Department: Clinical Services (Casualty/OPD/IPD as applicable)
Reporting To: Medical Director
Duty Station: Pandya Memorial Hospital – Main Branch and/or Nyali Clinic (deployment based on roster/need)
Engagement: Locum (Per-shift basis)
Compensation: Per shift pay (rate as per hospital-approved schedule)
- Job Purpose
To provide safe, timely, and patient-centered clinical care during assigned shifts, including assessment, stabilization, investigations, treatment, documentation, and escalation to consultants/senior clinicians, in accordance with PMH policies, regulatory standards, and SafeCare requirements.
- Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care Delivery
- Assess, diagnose, and manage patients in assigned areas (Casualty/OPD/IPD) according to evidence-based practice.
- Initiate emergency management and stabilization (ABC), and coordinate definitive care.
- Order and interpret investigations (laboratory, radiology, ECG) and implement appropriate treatment.
- Perform basic procedures within scope (e.g., cannulation, suturing, catheterization, NG tube insertion, abscess drainage) and document appropriately.
- Escalate promptly to consultants/senior clinicians for unstable or complex patients and ensure timely referrals.
Patient Flow & Coordination
- Support efficient patient movement: triage, admission, transfers, theatre preparation, and discharge processes.
- Communicate clearly with patients/families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up.
- Collaborate closely with Nursing, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology, Admissions and other departments to ensure seamless care.
Documentation & Medical Records
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely clinical documentation in patient files and registers.
- Ensure all orders are legible, signed, and compliant with hospital policy.
- Complete discharge summaries, referral notes, and relevant forms as required.
Medication Safety & Stewardship
- Prescribe safely (allergies, interactions, renal/hepatic dosing) and support antimicrobial stewardship.
- Ensure appropriate monitoring and documentation for high-risk medications and report adverse drug events.
Quality, Patient Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards and SafeCare requirements.
- Report incidents, near-misses, medication errors, and patient complaints through the hospital reporting system.
- Participate in handovers and brief clinical governance activities as required during shifts.
Professional Conduct
- Maintain punctuality, professionalism, and accountability throughout assigned shifts.
- Uphold confidentiality and ethical practice at all times.

- Safe, timely clinical decision-making and escalation.
- Complete and accurate documentation for every patient managed.
- Adherence to IPC, patient safety, and hospital policies.
- Professional teamwork and clear communication across departments.
- Required Qualifications
- MBChB/MBBS (or equivalent recognized medical degree).
- Valid KMPDC Practicing License (current).
- BLS certification (mandatory); ACLS/ATLS is an added advantage.
- Good professional standing with relevant regulatory bodies.
- Experience
- Two years post-internship experience preferred
- Prior experience in emergency/acute care is an advantage.
