Job Title: Dental Technician

Reports To: Dental Surgeon

  1. Job Purpose

To design, fabricate, repair, and modify dental prostheses and appliances based on dentist prescriptions, ensuring high-quality workmanship, patient safety, and compliance with IPC and quality standards.

  2. Technical Duties
  • Fabricate dental prostheses including dentures, crowns, bridges, veneers, and orthodontic appliances.
  • Produce, finish, and polish dental devices using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Perform repairs, relines, and adjustments on dental appliances.
  • Maintain accuracy in models, impressions, and casting processes.
  • Ensure proper color/shade matching and aesthetic finishing.
  1. Quality & Safety
  • Comply with all Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidelines in the dental laboratory.
  • Maintain cleanliness, calibration, and safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Follow safety procedures for handling chemicals, machinery, and materials.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  1. Administrative & Support Duties
  • Maintain records of appliance orders, fabrication progress, and completion timelines.
  • Monitor and manage stock of laboratory materials, tools, and consumables.
  • Collaborate with dental surgeons on design specifications and improvements.
  • Report equipment faults and support preventive maintenance schedules.
  1. Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma in Dental Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Valid registration/licensure with the relevant regulatory authority (e.g., KMPDC or equivalent).
  • Minimum 1–2 years of relevant experience in a dental laboratory.
  • Experience with modern dental materials and digital dentistry is an added advantage.
  1. Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of dental anatomy and prosthodontic principles.
  • Ability to interpret prescriptions accurately.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Understanding of IPC and workplace safety requirements.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  1. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  1. Quality of Dental Appliances
    • <5% remake rate due to fabrication errors.
    • Consistent adherence to aesthetic and functional requirements.
  2. Turnaround Time
    • Dentures: Completed within agreed timelines.
    • Crowns/bridges: Completed within set laboratory turnaround standards.
    • Repairs: Completed within 24–48 hours.
  3. Compliance with IPC & Safety Standards
    • 100% adherence to IPC protocols in the lab.
    • Zero preventable safety incidents.
  4. Clinician Satisfaction
    • Positive feedback from dentists regarding accuracy, fit, and finishing of prostheses.
    • Timely communication on cases requiring clarification.
  5. Documentation & Inventory Accuracy
    • Up-to-date and accurate records of all cases.
    • Zero stockouts of essential laboratory materials.
  6. Equipment and Workspace Management
    • Routine maintenance completed as scheduled.
    • Clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
