JOB TITLE:  RADIOLOGY NURSE

REPORTS TO:  RADIOLOGY MANAGER

a) JOB PURPOSE

To provide specialized nursing care in the Radiology Department, ensuring safe preparation, monitoring, and post-procedure care of patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures. The role supports radiologists, ensures patient safety and comfort, and contributes to SafeCare quality standards and hospital accreditation goals.

b) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Patient Care & Preparation

  • Receive and prepare patients for radiological procedures (X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Interventional Radiology).
  • Confirm patient identity, check consent, review history/allergies, and ensure readiness.
  • Provide patient and family education on procedures, risks, and aftercare.

B. Procedure Assistance

  • Assist radiologists during diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures (e.g., biopsies, drainages, angiographic studies, among others).
  • Maintain sterile fields, prepare instruments, and uphold infection prevention standards.
  • Administer and monitor contrast agents under supervision.

C. Patient Monitoring

  • Monitor and record vital signs before, during, and after procedures.
  • Identify and respond promptly to emergencies (contrast reaction, bleeding, collapse, among others).
  • Provide immediate nursing care until patient is stable for transfer/discharge.

D. Safety & Infection Prevention

  • Enforce radiation protection protocols (lead aprons, dosimeter use, shielding).
  • Ensure strict compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
  • Participate in crash cart readiness and emergency drills in radiology.

E. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate patient nursing records for all procedures.
  • Record medications, IV lines, contrast usage, adverse reactions, and interventions.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and complaints as per hospital policy.

F. Coordination & Communication

  • Liaise with referring clinicians, anesthetists, and other departments to optimize workflow.
  • Support smooth patient flow, minimizing delays and enhancing satisfaction.
  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring dignity and informed care.

G. Quality & SafeCare Compliance

  • Contribute to internal audits, KPIs, and SafeCare evidence files.
  • Support radiology-related quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in policy and SOP development for radiology nursing.

H. Professional Development

  • Attend CMEs, BLS/ACLS refreshers, and radiology-specific training.
  • Mentor junior nurses and nursing students attached to radiology.
  • Engage in continuous professional development for skill growth.

  • Strong clinical nursing skills (IV access, medication administration, emergency response).
  • Knowledge of radiology procedures, contrast safety, and patient care.
  • Excellent communication and patient education ability.

e) EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Valid Nursing Council of Kenya license.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Training in perioperative or critical care nursing is an added advantage.

d) KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 2–3 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Previous exposure in critical care, theatre, or radiology nursing is desirable.
  • Experience in managing contrast reactions and patient emergencies is an added advantage.
